Overview

The Chamber of Shipping is currently accepting applications for a full-time experienced Communications Specialist with strong writing, organizational, and time-management skills.   This is an exciting opportunity to work in a challenging communications environment at a time when the marine industry is making drastic changes in the way in which it engages governments and other stakeholders.

This position is responsible for the oversight and delivery of communications to the membership, various levels of government, and community stakeholders. Reporting to the President and working with the executive team, the Communications Specialist will recommend strategic measures to enhance clarity and reach of relevant information and create content to support business objectives and increase awareness of the organization's goals and initiatives as well as the importance of the association and the industry.

The Communications Specialist must maintain a high level of awareness of the organization’s mission, vision, values, business plan and strategic initiatives to ensure timely awareness of issues. The role will enhance efficiency, creativity, and consistency in the building and maintenance of strong branding and identity across all marketing and communications channels.

Position Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist is responsible for:

  • Being the source for writing, editing, and coordinating all communications for the organization.
  • Researching, writing and editing reports, news releases, speaking notes, articles, newsletters, annual reports, reference materials, presentations, and membership circulars.
  • Creating strategic content to support business objectives and increase awareness of the organization’s goals and initiatives.
  • Managing media relations and inquiries
  • Supporting website content and social media accounts
  • Developing key messages for advertising and campaigns

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a university degree in communications, journalism, political science or a diploma with a minimum 3 years of experience of strategic communications writing, including speech writing for executives, in a public relations agency or corporate environment. Experience working with senior management and knowledge of Canadian Press standards is desirable. 

This position is ideal for a self-motivated individual with an excellent command of the English language and effective writing, editing and story-telling skills with an ability to synthesize complex information from diverse sources into simplified language for a range of audiences. This person will have strong critical thinking, problem-solving and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Must be a team player who demonstrates professionalism and tact and can liaise effectively with members of the executive leadership team as well as with colleagues in departments across the organization.
