Sunshine State is owned by American Petroleum Tankers Parent LLC and is employed in moving refined petroleum products, crude oil and chemicals in the U.S. Jones Act protected domestic coastwise trade. She is one of a fleet that consists of five modern, double-hulled product tankers which were delivered from the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in 2009 and 2010.

APT maintains commercial management of the vessels, while technical and crew management is outsourced to Crowley Maritime’s management. Golden State, delivered in January 2009, is on time charter with BP, trading on the U.S. Gulf Coast; Pelican State, delivered in June 2009, is on time charter with Shell, trading on the U.S. Gulf Coast; and Sunshine State, delivered in December 2009, is on time charter with Chevron, trading on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Empire State and Evergreen State, delivered in July and December 2010, respectively,are in world-wide service with the navy’s Maritime Sealift Command.
It was announced in December that Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. is to purchase APT and State Class Tankers (SCT) from affiliates of the Blackstone Group and Cerberus Capital Management. The $962 million transaction includes the acquisition of all five of APT’s tankers and four of SCT’s medium range tanker new builds which are due for delivery from General Dynamics’ NASSCO shipyard by 2016. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014. The new vessels are to be designed with an LNG fuel option for main propulsion.
