June 6 - Jeremiah O'Brien

         Jeremiah O’Brien – preserved D Day Liberty Ship On this 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6 1944 which marked the beginning of the ultimately successful operation to liberate Europe from occupation and bring to an end World War II in Europe, we feature the preserved SS Jeremiah O'Brien a World War II standard design Victory Ship whose home today is Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 45, at the port of San Francisco (picture below right). The keel of this veteran lady was laid at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation, in South Portland, Maine on May 6, 1943 and she was launched on June 19, 1943. Although owned by the U.S.  government, she was operated by Grace Line for the next year and employed in carriage of ammunition and grain. In June 1944, she supported the D-Day invasion by ferrying supplies between Great Britain and Normandy 11 times (see picture below left). May 30 - Julia Oldendorff

         Julia Oldendorff - eco-designed Ultramax Loading 50,000 tons of copper concentrates for South Korea and India at Vancouver Wharves last weekend and through the early part of this week was the Julia Oldendorff here on her maiden voyage. May 23 - Oceanic Vega

       Oceanic Vega – advanced seismic research vessel Oceanic Vega is claimed to be one of the world’s most advanced seismic research vessels afloat. The vessel is designed to undertake large 3D, 4D or high-resolution projects, using a configuration of up 16 streamers separated by 100m or more. She is designed to stay permanently at sea with five-year dry docking intervals and refuelling carried out by dedicated support vessels.
